Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Timeless Rage, a power metal band hailing from Germany known for their epic compositions and dynamic performances. With their unique blend of symphonic elements and powerful storytelling, Timeless Rage has captivated audiences and carved out a special place in the metal scene. We’re excited to dive into the minds of the band members to learn more about their creative journey, the inspirations behind their music, and what they have in store for their fans in the future.
Welcome guys!!!
0. We’d like to start by getting to know the members of the band.
TR: Hello and first of all thanx for having us. So let’s start by introducing: Klaus our drummer is one of 3 remaining founding members of Timeless Rage. He’s one the most relaxed and driven force at the same time in our constellation. He’s mainly responseable for groove, power and versatility at the same time. Michael our guitar player is the second one and he’s holding the flag high. He is a networking guy who’s guitar playing is very unique, beside that he’s a fantastic background singer and has a very good taste for harmonies. Anna is our keyboard player and our femme la orchestra. Whenever things are getting kinda chaotic and way too anarchistic she’s the one, to glue it all together with her expertise on classic music composition. Christian, also on guitar is the recording master, and social media expert. He became a band member of Timeless Rage in 2017 and is the man on stage who often seems a bit shy, but is an absolute beast on guitar for riffs and lead. Mace, the bass player got a very musical background and joined the band with his 5 String Bass in 2016. He’s the one who creates to low-end-satisfaction to all of our listeners, and has a very great stagepersona. Our latest addition to our band is our Singer Nicolaj who joined us after the Untold album. He’s one of those singers who simply steps in a rehearsal room hearing an instrumental and comes along with a great line or a hook or a complete storyline on the fly. All these 6 pieces are a perfect match, and we couldn’t be more happy. |
1. How would you define the sound of Timeless Rage for those who haven’t heard you yet? What elements do you consider essential in your music?
TR: We would describe it as Symphonic Power Metal with a rather raw and dark approach, with very expressive and versatile compositions and male vocals. |
2. Power metal and symphonic metal each have unique characteristics; how do you blend these two genres to create something unique?
TR: We take the punch of Power Metal and the expressiveness and emotional aspects of Symphonic Metal. Each of our instrument has its own role, which means: the song is the hero. If there is an epic and emotional moving part in the song, which shines without glitter, we’ll keep it like that. If we think, there is something missing on parts, we add something to it. The emotional journey is the most important thing to us, no matter what instrument shall transport these emotions. But we like a good riff, too. Maybe thats what it makes unique to a certain point. We hope so. |
3. What are the main influences that inspire your sound and lyrics? Is there any band or artist that has especially influenced you?
TR: Every musician has some quite different influences of course, but we’re not like: “ok lets do a kinda Nightwish part here” or “lets do some Kamelot or Stratovarius quote here to make it successful”. Each of us is bringing a lot to the table, and we do not think: ok this could work if it would sound more like our heros. We just do it like we wanna hear a song. Often that means punchy and catchy. The Lyrics, since Nicolaj is our Singer, are mainly his job, as he’s responsible for the storytelling part. |
4. How do you usually approach the songwriting process?
TR: It’s very different every time. Sometimes, we listen to some already recorded riffs and work on these, sometimes someone is writing a complete song by its own. Sometimes we’re working synchronized on the same songs at home and sometimes we start fooling around at rehearsals. There are no rules for creativity. |
5. Narrative is very important in power metal. Could you tell us a bit about the themes or stories behind your songs?
TR: We tend to work on some “Good & Evil” stuff from different points of view. Religion and the idea of religion is one the main reasons for anything good and bad in this world. And everybody defines good and evil in a different way, which causes trouble, war, hatred and death… what we mean by that: religion isn’t a problem, humans and their way of dealing with power is the problem. |
6. What message do you hope to convey through your songs and lyrics? Are there any recurring themes in Timeless Rage’s music?
TR: If there is any message behind these songs: think twice, keep the balance, don’t follow any leaders blindly, God is an Idea, Peace seems to be an Idea, so follow your ideas but without harming any third party on your way. Freedom is not negotiable. |
7. What has your journey been like in the German and European metal scenes? Have you found support, challenges, or any surprises?
TR: What we’re able to say is: Metal is still alive, people still like Metal, and it still evolves because all the subgenera are blending into another. Metal is still on its peak, no matter how bad the market looks like for emerging bands, people still love metal in a small local club or a big arena and that’s something which makes the scene so unique and outstanding. The bands we meet are extremely helpful and the international community on social media is really great. Like you supporting us with this interview. |
8. What role do technology and production play in shaping your sound? Do you prefer an organic approach, or do you enjoy experimenting with digital tools?
TR: We do like the organic approach, but to be fair: none of us could afford working on a 64 track analog mix desk from back in the “golden” days, forget remote recording at home. Today you can use a laptop and an interface and are good to go in the box. So luckily, all these digital tools are good helpers. But they can’t do the emotional part of the job, this is up for the real musicians. You could have zillions of tools,.. but a song works on an emotional level, which isn’t available via any digital tool… yet. Let’s hope AI will not take over too soon. |
9. How do you view the current state of the metal scene in Germany and Europe? Is there any trend in progressive power metal that catches your attention?
TR: There never had been so many bands like these days, or at least you did not notice before social media. The musicians are way more technically trained, quicker, and sometimes way better than 30 years ago, but what we really miss at times: the real great emotions. See, there are trillions of outstanding fiddlers and nerds everywhere, fantastic vocalists, technical unbeatable monsters on drums or guitars, disguising acts with 12 million followers, filling stadiums. That’s great, don’t get us wrong. Sad is that you still see the same headliners on all big festivals that came from the “Good old days” where emotions where a thing. We prefer the fight, the sweating, the growing, the emotional experience of struggling, keeping it real all the way. The scene is full of talents and some subgenres are swinging to the top and back very quickly with some extremes passing by now and then, but the main feeling still seems: the scene is alive and kicking 😉 |
10. Live energy is crucial for a metal band. How do you prepare your concerts to convey your sound and message to the audience?
TR: We mainly meet for rehearsals before a show, working on small bits of details and always trying to modify our soundsystem on the way, as we’re working independently with our In-Ear rack that also switches guitar sounds automatically. Its mainly up to us to keep it going so we can have fun on stage and go all in with the audience without thinking about the technical side of things. |
11. What was the live performance you’ve enjoyed the most? Could you share an anecdote about it?
TR: I think we’re not able to pick out one specific thing, but I guess supporting U.D.O. (iconic) or playing on the same bill with bands like Masterplan (we can NOT share that backstagestory here), Freedom Call (nicest dudes), etc. is something that makes us very thankful and puts us out for new people to discover. But the best thing is to play in front of our fans, as they have been and they are still extremly loyal. It’s always the greatest pleasure to play for them. No matter if it’s a festival or a small club show. |
12. Besides music, what other topics are of interest to you in your daily lives?
TR: With 6 members in the band that is a wide field. The band certainly has a big share, but we have everything between Nintendo collector, board game nerd, Manga fan, flight simulator pilot, painter, cat parrent, sometimes overlapping between members. We do like to hang out at times without the band in the focus, like going to local concerts together, but we all do have day jobs and private lifes, sometimes with kids as well. That is a lot eating our time. |
13. What advice would you give to an emerging band wanting to break into metal?
TR: Hm, look at our numbers, we do not know either hahaha. We are growing constantly, but especially our social media game could always be better compared to the big names or young bands. But let’s guess: keep it going, especially rehearsals and personal meetings. Do not listen to a third party too much. Listen to and trust your inner self, craft your style and show it early, do not fall for perfection. |
14. What’s next for Timeless Rage? Are you working on new material, or do you have any special projects planned for the coming months?
TR: As we did release a single called “The Devil’s Masquerade” there shall sure be more coming up soon. We’re working on our next Album and are going to release at least another single of it soon, so watch out for this. We are thinking about collaborations as it helps both sides and can give new inspiration. |
15. Could you share a special message for your fans in Mexico and Latin America? Would you like to tour across these countries?
TR: Thanx so much for you great support, we haven’t expected anything, but we’re overwhelmed by your heartfelt support on social media with so many people sharing our music. Reccommendations by friends do so much for musicians, so please keep it up, nit only for our band. We would definetly love to come to your country. A Festival or Tour in Mexico or even an expanded one to South America would be very welcome. We love you! |
Thank you, a lot, for everything. Please stay in contact.
